Winnie Byanyima Demands Justice for Besigye, Says She Is Not Seeking Mercy or Forgiveness

June 20, 2026
Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS and wife of veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye, has made an emotional appeal for justice as her husband continues to face legal and political challenges in Uganda.

Speaking in a widely shared video statement, Byanyima emphasized that her call is not for special treatment, mercy, or forgiveness but for what she believes is a fair and just legal process for her husband.

“I am not begging for pleas, I am not begging for mercy, I am not begging for forgiveness. I am asking for justice for Kizza Besigye,” Byanyima said firmly.

Her remarks have attracted significant attention both within Uganda and internationally, with supporters and critics weighing in on the ongoing debate surrounding Besigye’s legal troubles and the broader state of political freedoms in the country.

Dr. Besigye has for decades been one of the most recognizable opposition figures in Uganda. A former ally of President Yoweri Museveni, he later became one of the government's strongest critics and has contested for the presidency multiple times.

Throughout his political career, he has faced numerous arrests and court cases, many of which have generated public debate and international scrutiny.

Supporters of Besigye argue that he has been targeted because of his political views and activism. Government officials, however, have consistently maintained that any legal action taken against him is based on the law and not political considerations.

In her statement, Byanyima stressed that her appeal is rooted in principles of fairness and the rule of law. She argued that every citizen, regardless of political affiliation, deserves equal protection under the law and access to a fair judicial process.

According to Byanyima, her husband should be given an opportunity to defend himself before an independent and competent court without prejudice or political influence. She suggested that the focus should be on ensuring justice rather than seeking sympathy.

The video, which circulated widely through social media platforms and was highlighted on NBS Morning Breeze and NBS Updates, quickly generated discussions among Ugandans. Many users expressed solidarity with Byanyima and Besigye, while others called for patience and respect for ongoing legal procedures.

Political commentators note that Byanyima’s intervention carries considerable weight due to her international standing and long history of advocacy on issues related to human rights, social justice, and equality. Her comments have therefore amplified attention on Besigye’s situation and renewed calls for transparency in handling politically sensitive cases.

Human rights activists and opposition supporters have continued to argue that Uganda's justice system should remain independent and free from political pressure.

They say public confidence in legal institutions depends on the fair treatment of all individuals, regardless of their political beliefs.
